In the more than 50 years since the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, the model has become no less exclusive and only exponentially more high tech. And unlike those vehicle models that undergo several design iterations before arriving on the line, the 2015 coupe is nearly identical to its concept version: a sporty two-door with refined appointments, an elegant swoop of a body and a 449-hp V8 biturbo engine with a deep roar.
The Exterior
The S-Coupe features a long, elegant hood with pronounced lines and distinctive power domes—a signature design element of Mercedes sports cars since the 1950s. The roofline is low and stretched, and the beltline is high. This model is both shorter and not quite as long as the four-door coupe, with a lower center of gravity, accentuated wheel arches and large 18- to 20-inch wheels.
The 2015 S-Class Coupe is also the first of Mercedes-Benz fleet to debut an active curve-titling function that allows the vehicle to lean into the road’s bends the way a motorcycle would. The advantage of the function is that the lateral acceleration acting on the driver and passengers is reduced, making for a more comfortable, almost cradled ride.
The Interior
New to this year’s S-Coupe model is an advanced touchpad and a floating wide-screen format TFT display, with an optional head-up display. The touchpad can be operated with finger gestures and handwritten letters, numbers and characters.
The optional head-up display is a completely futuristic innovation that projects a full-color virtual image (with a resolution of 480 x 240 pixel) into the driver’s field of vision, just two meters above the hood, allowing the driver to take in pertinent vehicle information without taking their eyes off the road.
Top-of-the-line surround sound by Burmester® comes standard along with AIR-BALANCE, which offers a choice of four different fragrance atomizers for your S-Coupe. Purchasers can further customize their coupe with optional features like High-End 3D Burmester® surround sound, a Warmth Comfort package with an electric armrest heating component, and Nappa designo leather with diamond backstitching.
Safety
The S550 and S63 AMG include standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive (not included in the S65 AMG), which helps maintain peace of mind in all conditions, at any time of year.
The optional P1 Package includes the Surround View Package. With this package, the S-Class looks ahead and 360 degrees around to ensure that any potential hazards in its path can be avoided. There are many standard and optional alert systems to help avoid collisions with vehicles and pedestrians.
As a bastion of innovative technology, the new S-Class Coupe offers the optional Driver Assist Package that comes with a litany of Mercedes-Benz’s most groundbreaking safety and driving assistance systems. Included are:
- PRE-SAFE brake with pedestrian detection
- DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist
- BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist
- Active Lane Keeping Assist
- Adaptive High-beam Assist
- Night View Assist Plus and
- COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS
The 2015 S-Class Coupe debuted in the US this fall and can now be test-driven at Benzel-Busch.
